It is imperative that every sufferer of acne understands and realizes the side effects of acne medication before starting on it. Different acne medications have different side effects. Isotretinoin is the most dangerous type of anti acne medication. As a matter of fact, it has been classified as a high risk medication. The side effects of this medication include risk of birth defects like craniofacial defects; central nervous system defects, depression, chapped lips, urinary problems, muscle and joint pain, temporary thinning of the hair, dry skin, headaches and decrease in night vision. If antibiotics are taken, side effects include excessive sensitivity to light, rashes and gastrointestinal problems. When antibiotics are used for prolonged periods of time, it can result in the development of resistant bacterial strains which no longer respond to treatment with the antibiotic. When birth control pills are used for acne, side effects include vaginal bleeding, retention of fluid, depression, higher risk of stroke, blood clots, heart attacks and breast cancer. Other general side effects of acne medication include tooth discoloration, thrombosis, liver problems, change in libido, change in body weight, tenderness in breasts, fatigue, mood swings, pigmentation of skin, tumors, allergies of the skin, hearing problems, behavioral disorders including suicidal tendencies, hypertension, changes in menstrual flow, leg cramps, dry eyes and dizziness. |
