Acne and underactive thyroid

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shed gland situated just above the breastbone. This gland secretes thyroid hormone, which control several metabolic processes within the body. Hypothyroidism witnesses lower production of the T3 and T4 hormones. Such hormonal imbalances and fluctuations can result in a disturbance of metabolic processes within the body. An under active thyroid gland can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum than usual. Excess sebum can clog pores in the skin. Dirt and debris accumulates in clogged pores, thereby creating an environment perfect for the growth of the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. These bacteria can cause skin irritation and inflammation, resulting in acne. As a matter of fact, hypothyroidism can cause some of the worst forms of acne. Other symptoms of this condition include asthma, allergies, atherosclerosis, diabetes and infertility. Signs of hypothyroidism include cold hands and feet, muscle stiffness, dizzy feeling while in motion, dry, flaky skin, hair loss, depression, weight gain, low libido, menstrual irregularities. This condition can be treated by hormone and nutrient supplementation. Nutrients like iodine, selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, niacin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, Biotin and L-cysteine are particularly effective in treatment of this condition.
