Isotretinoin for healing of acne |
Isotretinoin is popularly known as the medicine used in the treatment of the most severe types of acne. It is often used as the last resort in the treatment of severe acne when all other treatments have failed. It is not a topical cream or gel; instead, it is available in the form of capsules which can be ingested orally. It is manufactured by Accutane. Chemically, Isotretinoin is 13-cis retinoic acid which is a retinoid, a compound derived from Vitamin A. Its course generally lasts from 3 to 4 months and should be taken only on a doctor’s recommendation as you may experience several side effects otherwise. It should not be prescribed to pregnant women as it is known to cause birth defects. It is also used for treating other acne like diseases like folliculitis. Isotretinoin functions by reducing sebum production by shrinking the sebaceous glands. Another important fact about Isotretinoin is that it is a fat soluble compound so it can be absorbed in the body only in the presence of fat. So it is best taken after eating food. You can further consult your doctor in order to know about the kinds of food which promote its absorption in the blood stream. You cannot donate blood while on this medication and for a month after you discontinue it. |
