Whiteheads are caused when the oil and dead skin cells get clogged inside the pore and are unable to get drained out. This is a common form of acne which appears in the form of a pus-filled bump on the surface of the skin. It most commonly affects teenagers distressed with acne and pimples. The excessive formation of oil on the skin surface is known to be one of the predominant causes of whiteheads. Often the oil secreted by the sebaceous gland called sebum gets trapped by the skin cells. This leads to inflammation and thus the appearance of bump like appearing whiteheads. In addition, hormonal changes in the body also attribute towards the growth of this form of acne. At the time of hormonal imbalances, especially during the attainment of puberty, menstruation, menopause and more, the production of sebum increases. As the sebum gets completely blocked into the pores by the dead skin cells, the emergence of these bumps take place on the surface of the skin. Food can also be blamed for the formation of this skin disorder among adults and teenagers. Fatty food items and chocolates have been associated with the formation of all the forms of acne including blackheads and whiteheads.
